While this a month of celebration and a time when we highlight the issues, challenges and show open support to the community. Let’s explore, the reasons to accept LGBTQi+ as a norm:

  • It’s not a choice, it’s biology! Click here to read more about it
  • A survey conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in 2014 estimated that around 2.5% of the population in India identified as LGBTQ+.
  • Your own family members and friends may be a part of the community and struggling to share it with you.

Most countries across the world are finding it challenging to accept and embrace LGBTQAi+ community members due to various factors like religion, social stigma, cultural nuances.

Pride Month – The Indian Context

In India, we have come a long way to be actually fighting for #marriageequality, while this is promising, let’s explore more if LGBTQAi+ is a conversation only for the #urbanelists?

Below is an extract an article published by “The Print”:

Although there’s no government data on how Indians perceive homosexuality, a survey of more than 24,000 respondents from 12 Indian states, carried out in 2018-19, demonstrates that acceptance of same-sex relationships is neither urban nor elite.

The findings of the survey — conducted by the Delhi-based think tank Centre for the Study Developing Societies (CSDS)-Lokniti in collaboration with Azim Premji University in Bengaluru — were published in a report titled ‘Politics and Society Between Elections 2019’.

The findings of the survey contradict popular perceptions about Indians’ acceptance of same-sex relationships. Asked if society should accept same-sex relationships, 19 per cent each in urban and rural areas replied in the affirmative. At the same time, nearly 59 per cent of urban respondents said they did not want society to accept same-sex relationships — a view shared by 53 per cent of rural respondents.

While the above data is of 2019, how much have we changed as a society? If you are curious to understand more about the science behind LGBTQi+ here are some resources that’ll help you educate yourself and be an informed ALLY of the community. The more there’s media coverage and more conversations about the community, there’s bound to be better acceptance.
